Selling on Zalando: Guide to uploading products and how to resolve common errors
Opening your own sales channel on Zalando is a game changer for any fashion brand. We are talking about Europe's leading platform, a stage that guarantees visibility to millions of active users. However, there is a ‘but’. Unlike other more permissive marketplaces, Zalando is a complex machine with extremely strict quality standards.
As a Marketplace Specialist, I often see companies stuck for weeks (or months) in the onboarding phase, with catalogues on hold due to seemingly indecipherable technical errors. In this article, we'll look at how to upload products correctly and what pitfalls to avoid in order to go online without stress.
How to upload products to Zalando: the options
There is no single way to populate your Zalando storefront. The choice depends on the size of your catalogue and the technology you use:
Zalando Partner Programme (zDirect): This is the native portal for partners. It is ideal for monitoring performance and managing main flows.
Third-party integrators (Tradebyte, Lengow, Channable): If you manage thousands of SKUs, integration via external software is almost mandatory. These tools allow you to map your data to the fields required by Zalando.
Direct API connection: For companies with a structured IT department that want total control over data flow.
Technical difficulties: why “copy and paste” doesn't work
Size Conversion
This is the most difficult hurdle. Each market (Italy, Germany, France, etc.) has its own rules, and each product category requires a specific size chart. If the conversion is not perfect, the item is rejected by the system to avoid excessive returns due to incorrect sizes.
Images and Content Quality Control
Zalando performs human and algorithmic quality control. Backgrounds that do not comply with the required RGB colour code, overly invasive logos or the lack of a ‘material detail’ photo can lead to the immediate blocking of the SKU.
Common errors (and how to fix them)
If you are trying to upload your products, you may have encountered these error messages:
Error
Probable Cause
Specialist Solution
Missing Mandatory Attributes
Data such as material composition or primary colour is missing.
Enrichment of the data feed at source (PIM or ERP).
EAN Validation Failed
The barcode is not registered correctly or is duplicated.
Check the GS1 database and clean up unique codes.
Brand Not Authorised
The brand has not yet been approved by Zalando.
Open a ticket and send brand ownership documentation.
Why rely on a Marketplace Specialist?
Many companies think that uploading products to a marketplace is purely an administrative task. In reality, it is a job of technical and strategic optimisation.
My job is to translate your warehouse's needs into Zalando's language. Resolving a validation error on zDirect or configuring Tradebyte correctly means reducing time-to-market: instead of waiting months to see your products online, we can be up and running in a matter of days.
Conclusion
Selling on Zalando is a marathon, not a sprint. Initial technical precision is what determines future sales success. If your catalogue is blocked or if upload errors seem like a maze with no way out, it's time to take action on your integration flows.
